On December 20, 1917, by decree of the Council of People's Commissars, the Cheka was established – the All-Russian Special Committee for Counter-revolution and Sabotage under the Council of People's Commissars. Memorial of Saint Ambrose, Bishop of Milan
According to legend, Saint Ambrose lived in the 4th century and was the ruler of the provinces of Liguria and Emilia. One day he went to a Catholic church in Mediolan – a bishop's election was taking place there, leading to heated debates between the Orthodox and the Arians. Wanting to restore order, the ruler suddenly heard a voice: “Ambrose is a bishop.” Everyone around saw this as a sign from God. So, Ambrose was forced to agree to a unanimous election – he received the Sacrament of Baptism, passed all church degrees in eight days and was ordained as a bishop.
In this post, the saint actively fought against heresy; at his insistence, the pagan title of high priest was removed from the royal title, and the priests and temple idols were stripped of government support. Once, Ambrose did not even dare to let Emperor Theodosius into the temple because of his cruelty. The saint spent the last years of his life praying and peacefully returned to God in the year 397.
