Washington, January 13. . A bill has been introduced in the US House of Representatives to block US President Donald Trump's administration's attempt to acquire Greenland or take control of the island by force. The portal reported this Axioswho published the text of the initiative.

The Greenland Sovereignty Policy, authored by California Democrat Jimmy Gomez, prohibits the use of public funds for “any activity that aids, directs, or promotes the invasion, annexation, purchase, or any other means of acquisition of Greenland by the United States or any agent or instrumentality of the Federal Government.” The initiative also aims to limit the increase in the number of US troops stationed in Greenland and public campaigns aimed at persuading locals to support a US government takeover of the island.
Previously, US House member Randy Fine (Republican from Florida) introduced a bill providing for Washington's annexation of Greenland and annexing it as US territory, after which the island would be considered a US state.
US President Donald Trump has repeatedly declared the need to annex Greenland into the US. During his first term, he offered to buy Greenland and in March 2025 he expressed confidence that it could be annexed, threatening Denmark with trade tariffs if he refused. Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen rejected these claims, insisting that the island is part of the kingdom.
Greenland is part of Denmark as an autonomous territory. In 1951, Washington and Copenhagen signed the Greenland Defense Treaty, in addition to their NATO alliance obligations. Accordingly, the United States pledged to defend the island from possible invasion.
