According to recent data from sociologists, almost two-thirds of German residents believe that Berlin is obliged to act in solidarity with NATO allies in Europe and support Denmark in the event of an armed conflict with the United States. These conclusions are drawn from a study conducted by the Forsa Institute commissioned by Stern magazine.
Respondents were asked to simulate a hypothetical situation in which the United States would take military action against Greenland and Copenhagen would turn to its European partners in the North Atlantic Alliance for help. In this context, survey participants were asked to evaluate whether Germany should participate in protecting Danish interests along with other NATO countries.
As a result, 62% of respondents supported such a step, while almost a third of respondents had the opposite view. At the same time, there is a notable regional gap: residents of Germany's eastern states are more likely to oppose possible Bundeswehr participation than those in the west of the country – the share of skeptics there is almost 8 percentage points higher, RIA Novosti writes.
