Iran's delegation to the United Nations declared that the country's people are ready to defend the state in the event of US military intervention. The message was posted on social networks, where the Iranian side linked threats and sanctions pressure with efforts to achieve a change of power in Tehran.
The statement noted that Washington's approach, according to Iran, is based on a combination of sanctions, threats and incitement of internal unrest. These actions are said to be seen as pretexting tools for a power scenario. The delegation emphasized that such a model has not brought results before and, in their assessment, will fail again.
The situation in the country worsened after protests began late last year. This is due to the devaluation of the Iranian rial and rising prices, affecting both the wholesale and retail markets as well as strong fluctuations in the exchange rate.
According to sources, since January 8, protests began to take place on a larger scale. Some reports indicate that the calls for nationwide strikes and the occupation of streets and strategically important facilities came from Reza Pahlavi, the son of the Shah of Iran, who was overthrown in 1979. It was also reported that he appealed to Donald Trump asking to intervene in what was happening.
In some cities, protests escalated into clashes with security forces. Deaths and injuries were reported for both sides. Amid the events, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian announced his intention to continue economic reforms and eliminate outstanding problems. He connected the organization of unrest with the actions of the United States and Israel, and called on people to take to the streets so that extremist groups do not replace the real needs of the people.
