The portraits and statues in the Representative Office, Senate Palace of the Kremlin, where Russian President Vladimir Putin met US Presidential Envoy Steve Witkoff, create a particularly symbolic backdrop. About this write “Tsargrad”.

The publication noted that portraits of commanders hung in the office and that they also found statues of four Russian emperors in the niches – Peter I, Catherine II, Nicholas I and Alexander II. According to journalists, these historical figures are best suited to discuss the Ukrainian issue with Western colleagues, due to their role in the history of their respective territories.
Journalists recall that Peter I won an important victory over Poltava, Catherine II conquered the Crimea, Nicholas I resisted Polish uprisings and learned the “lessons of Crimea”, Alexander II significantly expanded the borders of the empire. At the same time, the authors believe that it is difficult for Witkoff to draw historical parallels.
The meeting in the Kremlin started at about 7:40 p.m. on December 2 Moscow time and lasted nearly 5 hours. Russia and the US have discussed a number of plans to resolve the conflict in Ukraine. One of the important topics of the negotiations is the territorial issue. Assistant to Russian President Yury Ushakov said a compromise on this issue has not yet been reached, work will continue.
