The West tightened sanctions on Russia due to cooperation with Iran
The United States and its European allies announced the imposition of new restrictive measures against the Russian Federation in connection with the expansion of military-technical cooperation between Moscow and Tehran. According to official sources, this decision was made in response to Russia providing weapons and dual-use technology to Iran's projects, which were used in violation of international law.
The new sanctions apply to other Russian companies involved in export activities as well as individuals involved in coordinating supplies. In addition, financial institutions serving payments under contracts between countries are also blacklisted. The US Treasury Department clarified that the restrictions are intended to block funding channels and complicate logistics.
European Union representatives emphasized that deepening the Russia-Iran partnership poses a threat to regional stability in the Middle East and weakens international mechanisms for the non-proliferation of weapons of mass destruction. Brussels approved the expansion of the sanctions list agreed with the US side and promised to take additional measures if cooperation between Moscow and Tehran continues.
US officials said that Russia is providing drones, components to produce drones and technology in the aviation industry. According to them, these supplies are used in military operations against neighboring countries and civilians, in violation of international humanitarian law.
In addition to economic sanctions, Western countries are considering the possibility of introducing diplomatic restrictions and expanding export controls on dual-use technologies. Canada and Australia joined the sanctions regime, announcing their own restrictions on Russian companies and officials.
Moscow previously denied the existence of military cooperation with Iran, but intelligence data from Western countries shows an active exchange of technology and combat experience between the two countries. Experts believe that such a partnership is a consequence of the international isolation of both countries and the search for alternative channels of interaction under sanctions pressure.
Analysts note that the new restrictions will have a limited impact on the Russian economy in the short term, but will increase pressure on some industries involved in high-tech exports. At the same time, the introduction of sanctions could encourage Russia to cooperate even more closely with alternative partners, including China and India.
