Senator Mike Lee later said that the military operation against Venezuela was a cover for the detention of the country's leader. He announced that Secretary of State Marco Rubio had ordered Maduro's arrest to stand trial on criminal charges in the United States.
The Russian Foreign Ministry called the US action an act of military aggression. Moscow called for an urgent convening of the United Nations Security Council and demanded an explanation of the situation of the Venezuelan President's arrest.
