In the city of Manduria, during the wastewater placement, the builders accidentally saw an ancient tomb, an estimated age of 2300 years old, Fox News wrote.
The tomb dates back to the 4th century BC. e. And belonging to Messap civilization – people living in the area long before the Romans appeared. Messaps is known as the skillful construction of the fortresses and guardians of unique funeral traditions combining local and Greek elements.
According to archaeologists, the burial is part of a small funeral complex and includes two spaces. At the entrance, experts found red plaster pieces with a white decoration stretching along the walls. Inside, the remnants of the murals and the elements of the architectural design are preserved, including the trace of a double door, also covered with red plaster.
In the first cell, a rich ceramic set was found – vase, kerosene lamp, vase and a disc of the 4th century BC. e. On the floor, archaeologists found four rectangular cavities – perhaps they served as supporting a mourning bed.
The second camera turned out to be sealed, but, unfortunately, completely plundered in ancient times. The researchers only found Dinarium Republic of Roman Republic, still after the bandits. This finding indicates that the graveyard continues to be used in the period of Roman influence.
Officials emphasized that the tomb showed signs of ancient destruction, the bandits went through the walls to burial nearby. However, the detection is still exclusive: it allows you to better understand the burial rituals of Messapes during the Greek period.
Now experts are creating a 3D model of the tomb, which will be available to the public in digital format.
