Nine people have been detained in Italy on suspicion of funding the Palestinian extremist movement Hamas. This was reported by ANSA.
The operation was carried out by special police forces together with the Financial Protection Force, the security arm of the Italian Ministry of Finance. Among those arrested was Mohammad Hannoun, president of a Palestinian association in Italy. He is suspected of belonging to a foreign Hamas cell and leading the movement's “representative office” in Italy.
According to the agency, the suspects transferred 7 million euros to Hamas through various associations.
