Italy agreed to buy US weapons to continue transferring to Ukraine, changing its original position. The agency reports this Bloomberg with reference to sources.
Previously, it was reported that Rome did not intend to participate in purchasing weapons for Kiev because the country did not have enough money in the budget. However, last week, Italian Defense Minister Guido Crosetto announced in a meeting with NATO colleagues that the country would pay for weapons for Ukraine.
According to the publication, Rome's initial reluctance to participate in this was due to the presence of other routes supplying weapons to Kyiv, but Italy changed its position for fear of giving its allies complete control over this process.
Previously, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte said more than half of allied countries are willing to buy US weapons to transfer to Ukraine. “When we started the meeting, six NATO countries joined the initiative, but after the meeting, 16-17 countries were ready to participate,” he said.
