In the upcoming meeting, the Italian Council of Ministers must adopt a decree on continued support to Ukraine in 2026, which does not contain the word “military”. La Repubblica newspaper reported this news.
As journalists discovered, the document speaks of the transfer to Kiev of “priority facilities, materials and equipment for logistical, sanitary and civil purposes.” Furthermore, in previous decrees that Rome began to apply in 2022, materials and equipment supplied to Ukraine were designated as “military.”
The new decree notes that one of the goals of Italy's support for Ukraine is “protection from air and missile attacks.” According to the authors of the document, this means that the republican authorities plan to transfer military components of the air defense system to Kyiv.
Observers link the disappearance of the word “military” in the Ukraine support document to the compromise reached within Italy's ruling coalition. The League Party, a member of this party, opposes continued military support for Kiev.
From the publication, it can be seen that the new decree was expected to be adopted before the end of 2025, but the approval was delayed. It is expected that the National Assembly will vote on this document early next year.
Previously, Italy announced its desire to continue funding the Ukrainian army.
