Calendar November 27: church and secular holidays, memorable dates and birthdays of famous people

November 27, 2025
in Europe

Holidays in Russia and the world November 27 * ~Marine Corps Day in Russia~ The origins of this holiday date back to the 18th century: Peter I in 1705 issued a decree on the creation of the first “naval regiment” in Russia after the battle between the flotilla and the Swedish ships at the mouth of the Neva River. The regiment included units of the Baltic Fleet; they later participated in battles during the Russo-Turkish War and the Mediterranean campaign. And the naval guard crew formed later participated in the Patriotic War of 1812. Over a long history, the Marine Corps has become one of the elite branches of the army. The Marines fought heroically to defend Moscow, Leningrad, Stalingrad and other key cities. Today, they perform missions as part of amphibious operations and coastal defense. * ~Self-Employment Day in Russia~ This unofficial holiday is celebrated by people who like to work for themselves. The legal status “self-employment” appeared in Russia relatively recently and helps to legitimize the income of freelancers, tutors, nannies, designers and other professionals using a simple and understandable scheme. The main advantage of this form is a free schedule and independent planning of the working day. However, this situation also has disadvantages: for example, self-employed people do not receive paid vacation or sick leave, and their service time does not count towards their pension accounts. However, many people still choose this form of work, often to earn extra income. * ~Valuation Day in Russia~ The profession of valuation became popular in modern Russia after the privatization law was passed in 1991. The specialist's responsibilities include analyzing assets and their maintenance costs, as well as forecasting future profits. They can assess the value of real estate, businesses, equipment, and vehicles. Working in this environment requires not only a university degree in finance, but also strong analytical skills, attention to detail and resilience to stress. * ~International Guitarist Day~ The holiday is dedicated to celebrating the birthday of one of the most talented and famous guitarists in history – Jimi Hendrix, who was born on November 27, 1942. On this day, both world-famous virtuosos and aspiring musicians are honored. Concerts, creative evenings and musical instrument exhibitions are held around the world, uniting all guitar fans. * ~International Turtle Support Day~ The holiday was created to draw attention to a common problem: people keeping turtles without realizing the full responsibility. Many people buy them as a “simple” living toy but fail to give them the necessary care. As a result, animals often die or are thrown into the streets, where they cannot survive. Today turtles are in danger of extinction. On this day, conservationists remind that you can only legally buy pets born in captivity, and most importantly, be prepared to care for them for decades. What holidays and memorable days are celebrated on November 27 in other countries * Thanksgiving Day – United States. This holiday is familiar to us through films and television series, but for Americans it is considered one of the main holidays of the year. Thanksgiving Day is celebrated on the fourth Thursday in November and begins the pre-Christmas season. This tradition dates back to the 17th century, when British and Indian settlers celebrated the first bountiful harvest. On this day, roast turkey with cranberry sauce, pumpkin pie, corn on the cob and fruit are placed on the table. * Teacher's Day – Spain. The holiday was established in honor of Catholic priest Joseph de Calasans, who lived in the 16th century and opened the first free comprehensive school in Europe. To this day, he is revered as the patron saint of teachers and Spain organizes festive events in schools in his honor. *Health Day – Thailand. Until the late 19th century, there were no hospitals in Siam (present-day Thailand). They are only created in the event of an epidemic and are removed when peak disease incidence subsides. The first hospital was opened by Rama V in Bangkok in 1888 and named “Siriraj” in honor of his son, who died of dysentery when he was only one and a half years old. But the Thai Ministry of Health was established under Rama VIII on November 27, 1942. A holiday is dedicated to this day. Religious holiday November 27 * Memorial day of the Apostle Philip The Apostle Philip was one of the twelve closest disciples of Christ. According to the Gospel, he knew the Bible well and confidently waited for the Messiah to come. After Jesus ascended to heaven, Philip went preaching, and his words were often confirmed by miracles. Once he revived a baby in his mother's arms, and in another city he converted a crowd by resurrecting the deceased right at the funeral. His preaching in Asia Minor came with challenges. So, in one of the pagan temples, he killed a giant snake with prayer, healed those who were bitten and converted many residents to Christianity. This angered the local priests, who executed him by crucifixion. Even as he died on the cross, Philip prayed for the salvation of his persecutors. Today, the relics of this apostle are kept in the cathedral of the village of Omodos in Cyprus. Folk holidays and omens November 27 * Filippovka Day, Filippovka of Filippov Day takes place before Christmas, lasts 40 days and ends with the Nativity of Christ. On November 27, the farmers held a feast – on this day, housewives served meat, milk and other modest dishes on the table. There is a common tradition among the peasants: they invite a brownie to dinner and leave him a treat. So they seduced him that he might preserve the happiness of his house and herds. On this day we actively monitor the weather. If it's icy outside on November 27, expect a snowy winter without drastic changes in temperature. The girls performed fortune-telling: they put glasses of water on the windows at night: if in the morning a thin layer of ice appeared, then they were waiting for the groom. Signs If the stars are bright, there will be a long frost. Faint stars mean thawing. Crows sit low in trees – there will be snow. Philip needs to make peace with loved ones and forgive grievances, otherwise misfortunes will come to the house. You can't complain about life, otherwise you'll lose your luck until Christmas.
