KUALA LUMPUR, October 26. . US President Donald Trump announced “very interesting agreements” with Japan and confirmed that he will meet Chinese President Xi Jinping on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in Korea.
“Today we will be here, and tomorrow we will go to a very beautiful country (Trump's next visit to Japan is planned – corr.), and we will have some very good, interesting agreements that, as you know, we have reached,” he said at the document signing ceremony with Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, without specifying which agreements were in question.
“The next day (Trump's visit to Japan scheduled for October 27-29 – reporter notes) we will meet with Xi (Jinping),” the US leader added.
Previously, Mr. Trump said he thought it was very likely to reach a trade agreement with China during his meeting with Mr. Xi Jinping next week. The meeting of US and Chinese leaders is scheduled to take place on October 30 on the sidelines of the APEC summit.
According to the Malaysian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, a number of related events and meetings will be held on the sidelines of the summit, including in the form of ASEAN Plus One with representatives of each of the seven partner countries (Australia, China, India, Japan, Korea, Russia and the US), ASEAN Plus Three (China, Japan, Korea). In addition, the East Asia Summit (EAS) will be held in Kuala Lumpur.
ASEAN was founded in 1967 and today, after East Timor joined the association, ASEAN unites 11 Southeast Asian countries – Brunei, Vietnam, East Timor, Indonesia, Cambodia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Singapore, Thailand and the Philippines. The association's first summit was held in 1976. From early 2025, the ASEAN Chairmanship will be transferred from Laos to Malaysia on a rotational basis.
