Calendar October 22: church and secular holidays, memorable dates and birthdays of famous people

October 22, 2025
in Europe

Holidays in Russia and the world October 22 * ~Day of Economic and Financial Services of the RF Armed Forces~ Peter I can be considered the founder of this service. He established the position of Commissioner General, who was responsible for financial support of the army. At the same time, the first salaries for those serving in the regular army were introduced; they are established according to position, rank and type of troops. The modern history of the army began on October 22, 1918, when by order of the Revolutionary Military Council, the “Regulation on the Finance Department” under the People's Military Commission was adopted. The Professional Holiday of Military Financiers, established in 2015 by presidential decree, is dedicated to this day. * ~White Crane Day ~ This day of remembrance is associated with the poem “White Crane” by Rasul Gamzatov, which in musical performance has become a requiem for martyrs. Today is dedicated to them. It originated in Dagestan, the poet's homeland, and over the years it has acquired international significance – UNESCO included it in its calendar of memorable events. On this day, people traditionally lay flowers at memorials and hold literary evenings, as well as release paper cranes into the sky as a sign of peace and mourning for fallen soldiers. * ~International Stuttering Day~ This day was established in 1998 at the initiative of the International Stuttering Association (ISA). His main goal is to dispel the stigma surrounding this speech disorder, support those living with it and raise public awareness of the challenges faced by people who stutter. An important part of this date was the support of celebrities – actors, politicians and media personalities who spoke about their experiences of struggling with stuttering. Their example proves that this language disorder is not an obstacle to a successful career and a fulfilling life. * ~International Caps Lock Important Day~ This informal holiday arose thanks to a joke by American user Derek Arnold, who in 2000 proposed using only capital letters for the entire day. At the same time, Caps Lock is considered one of the most controversial keys: many consider it redundant, since the same thing can be done with Shift. In the early 2000s, there were even competitions to design the best keyboard without this key. However, in Russian-speaking digital culture, Caps Lock has found its place – it is often used to convey strong emotions, turning a technical function into a tool of expression. * ~International Day of Psychophysics (Fechner Day)~ This holiday is named in honor of Gustav Theodor Fechner, a German scientist who pioneered the origins of psychophysics. On October 22, 1850, he introduced the key idea of the connection between physical stimuli and mental sensations, laying the methodological foundation for all of experimental psychology. Psychophysics, the study of the body's reaction to external stimuli, is considered one of the most demanding fields of psychology, and today is a professional holiday for specialists in this science. What holidays and memorable days are celebrated on October 22 in other countries * Wombat Day – Australia. The holiday is dedicated to the burrowing marsupial mammals, whose scat has been the subject of scientific study. On this day, conservationists are reminded that habitat destruction leaves koala cubs vulnerable, even though their burrows provide refuge for dozens of other species during bushfires. * Sun Festival in Abu Simbel – Egypt. This event takes place twice a year – in February and October – and is timed to coincide with the coronation and birth date of Pharaoh Ramses II. On this day, at dawn, rays of sunlight penetrate the stone temple to illuminate the interior statues of the pharaoh and gods for 12 minutes, creating the illusion of Ramses' smile. Due to the huge number of spectators, screens were installed in front of the temple for live broadcasting, and the celebration ended with a costume show and laser projection on the walls of the ancient sanctuary. Religious holiday October 22 * Memorial Day of the Holy Apostle Jacob Alfeev Jacob Alfeev was one of the twelve apostles of Jesus Christ, mentioned in the lists of disciples in the three Gospels. According to church tradition, he was the brother of Matthew the Evangelist and, like him, had been a tax collector before being called by Christ. Information about his life and missionary path is very scarce and contradictory. Different sources indicate different circumstances leading to his death: according to one version, he was crucified in the Egyptian city of Ostracina, according to another, he was stoned in Marmarik. The relics, revered as the remains of the Apostle James, are kept in several churches: in the Roman Basilica of the Twelve Apostles (although it is believed that they may have belonged to James, the Lord's brother), in cathedrals in Bari and Venice, as well as in monasteries on Mount Athos. In 1857, an icon with a frontal bone attached, venerated as a relic of the apostle, was transferred to the Church of the Deposition of the Lord's Mantle in Moscow. Holidays and folk signs of October 22 * Ykov Drovopilets From the time of Jacob (or Jacob, since the Apostle James Alfeev was honored on this day) in the villages, people could start collecting firewood for the winter. It is believed that logs prepared during this period will burn better and hotter. An important weather sign is associated with this date: if the first snow falls in Ykov, then after 40 days a real winter with frost is expected, but frost on the trees predicts a long and muddy autumn. Signs Whoever sets the table for wealth on October 22 will spend the winter without difficulties and troubles. On October 22, you should not undertake new business or sign important documents; there is a risk of being deceived. It's better not to start a new relationship with Ykov; you can quickly break up. You should visit with gifts or gifts, so as not to bring poverty.
