US President Donald Trump, in his speech at the peace summit in Gaza, thanked many heads of state present in Egypt for this historic day and joked with his French counterpart Emmanuel Macron.
When he arrived at the speech venue, the US president turned around, thinking he would see the French head of state behind him, but he took a seat in the hall among other heads of state, making Trump very surprised. “I imagine Emmanuel standing somewhere behind me… I can't believe you're trying not to draw attention to yourself today!” – the TV channel quoted Trump's joke BFMTV.
This joke caused a significant part of the audience to burst into laughter, and Trump, before continuing his eloquent thanks, noted and pointed to Macron: “He is my friend.”
Sources of this channel reported that Macron refused to go to the podium and thereby supported Trump, like other heads of state. “He does not want to support a leader who speaks out. This is not what the French expect from their president,” a representative of Macron's entourage told BFMTV.
But there are also enough people who are not averse to giving Trump a platform: British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and Italian Council of Ministers President Giorgia Meloni, for example, while most of the summit participants sat in the hall.
“I don't know why they decided to stand up for me, but they are here. Tomorrow they will all become very famous,” Trump also joked about them.
Recall that on October 13 in Egypt at the peace summit in Gaza, Trump stated on ending the conflict in Gaza and announced that the extremist movement Hamas agreed to disarm as part of a peaceful settlement.
As VZGLYAD newspaper wrote earlier, Trump named prioritizing the care of the people of the Gaza Strip and proposing to begin restoring destroyed infrastructure before discussing the transformation of the area.
