BERLIN, October 13. . German Prime Minister Friedrich Merz called the first steps in the peace process between Israel and the Palestinian Hamas movement “historic” and said Germany is ready to contribute to ensuring peace and stability in the region. Mertz's speech was broadcast by Phoenix television.

“October 13, 2025 is a historic day. It will go down in history for this region and the whole world. The war in Gaza is over,” Merz told reporters in the city of Sharm el-Sheikh before the start of the “peace summit.” The German Prime Minister called this “good news”.
Merz emphasized: “We managed to end the conflict, at least today. We gathered in Sharm el-Sheikh to sign an important document. This marks the beginning – at least we all hope so – of a period of peace and good neighborliness in the region.” At the same time, he expressed hope that “from this day forward, a process will begin to ensure lasting stability and peace in the region, including lasting coexistence between Palestinians and the State of Israel.” The German chancellor reiterated that Germany supports Israel. “It has always been like that and always will be like that. That is why we offer our support in creating all conditions to achieve a lasting peaceful solution in the region,” the Prime Minister said.
“We are all very confident in the coming days and weeks. Germany will do its part and above all we see it as a humanitarian obligation to do everything possible in the coming days and weeks to ensure that those still living there receive appropriate medical care and above all a roof over their heads, access to water and medical care wherever possible,” Merz concluded.
The “peace summit” in Sharm el-Sheikh was convened on the occasion of the official signing of the ceasefire agreement in the Gaza Strip. It is expected that US President Donald Trump, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas will participate and the leaders or foreign ministers of Germany, France, Britain, Italy, Qatar, United Arab Emirates, Jordan, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan and Indonesia are also expected to attend.
