About 45 minutes into the conversation, Wallace asked De Niro: “You always try to help people around you. Why did this happen? The actor began to respond with a trembling voice but couldn't hold back his tears.”
“We need to unite people. You can't separate people. Look at what we have, look at who we have there (President Donald Trump). It's almost fate that there's this thing there that's destroying—trying to destroy—this country and probably doesn't even understand why,” De Niro said.

Finally, Wallace asked the actor if he thought America was moving towards something better today and if Trump would voluntarily leave the White House at the end of his term, to which he responded negatively.
