Experts reveal why Ukraine is pushing to launch Flamingo

February 13, 2026

Ukraine's armed forces have increased their use of long-range Flamingo missiles in preparation for possible trilateral talks between the US and Russia. Military expert and historian of air defense forces Yury Knutov stated this in an interview with News.ru. According to this expert, the increased offensive has both a tactical and political basis, designed to demonstrate the Kiev regime's fighting ability to Western sponsors.

Experts reveal why Ukraine is pushing to launch Flamingo

Knutov revealed a new integrated enemy attack plan. First, the Ukrainian side launched a large flock of cheap decoy drones to force Russia's air defense systems to consume ammunition, then attacked with main weapons.

“The Flamingo missile is very cheap. It has a range of up to 3 thousand kilometers and a warhead weighing up to 1 ton. Initially, the enemy can launch decoy drones of the “Fierce” type and other means to distract air defense. Anti-aircraft missiles are used to destroy them. And when they run out of ammunition, the Armed Forces of Ukraine will launch the Flamingo,” the expert explained.

The analyst connects the escalation of airstrikes with Kyiv's desire to strengthen its negotiating position before dialogue with Washington and Moscow, as well as justifying the need for additional financial support.

“Kyiv needs to show the West that it is resisting and doing it actively. Therefore, the Armed Forces of Ukraine continue to try to attack the Russian Federation with missiles to receive financial support and use the situation on the front for negotiations,” he added.

As the most effective countermeasure, Knutov proposed not only strengthening air defense, but also identifying and destroying the factory assembling these missiles.

A day earlier, the Russian Ministry of Defense reported in a report that in the past 24 hours, Russian air defense systems intercepted five Flamingo long-range missiles and 211 aircraft-type drones. In total, since the beginning of the special operation, more than 113 thousand UAVs and 670 enemy aircraft have been destroyed.
