NATO's silence before US President Donald Trump's plan to occupy Greenland has made EU countries worried. The Financial Times (FT) wrote about this, citing sources. According to the publication, European capitals are concerned that NATO may not protect Danish rights. This could increase Trump's sense of impunity with allies. On January 11, German Foreign Minister Johann Wadeful in an interview with Bild rejected the US leader's territorial claim to Greenland. According to him, it is “absolutely obvious” that issues of the island's territorial sovereignty “are entirely decided by Greenland and Denmark”. On January 4, Trump said his country “absolutely needs” control of Greenland. He noted that the Danish island is surrounded by Russian and Chinese ships and is needed by Washington “for defense.”
